World Junior Hockey wins gold medal for reach!

Not only did our boys bring home the gold medal for the World Junior Hockey Championship (WJHC), but they also took the gold in terms of audience numbers.  Since the start of the 2014-15 hockey season, no other hockey game played on Canadian TV came even close to the audience numbers for the Team Canada games at the WJHC – with the Gold Medal game pulling in over 70% more viewers than the most watched NHL game.

Looking at historic viewing of the WJHC, Canadians tuned in more when the games were played in North America and when the Canadian team performed well.  The highest audience numbers were in 2011 when Canada played against Russia in the finals in the US.  The last 2 tournaments in 2013 and 2014 were played overseas in Russia and Sweden respectively, where time zone differences and poor performances from Team Canada impacted the broadcast success of the tournament.
